Jim Ross Consulting is a full service communications and media firm. With a background in politics, we bring the urgency of a campaign to all of our projects. Recently, we helped a major retailer open a new store; announced a major gift to San Francisco's parks; developed support for electric medical records; promoted the expertise of financial advisors for one of the largest investment firms in the world and worked for better health care access in San Francisco.
Jim Ross is a nationally recognized expert in campaign management, political strategy and public affairs. With more than twenty years of campaign management experience, Ross has managed and won candidate and initiative campaigns at the local, state and federal level. He is frequently called upon by the media and various other organizations to speak about political strategy.
Ross has helped build a statewide small business organization in California, has run city council campaigns in New York City, has worked to defeat ballot measures in San Francisco, and has assisted in preserving open space in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has also managed several legislative campaigns.
In 2002, Ross’s firm ran the successful campaign to pass San Francisco’s Proposition N (Care Not Cash). The campaign garnered national attention to the homeless crisis in San Francisco and Calpeek, California’s leading political journal, called Ross’s efforts “The best local campaign of 2002.” Proposition N received 59% of the vote, a year after a similar effort failed.
While managing the Proposition N campaign, Ross’s firm also helped the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local Union 1245, address measures on the San Francisco ballot. In 2003, Ross managed Gavin Newsom’s mayoral campaign.
In November 2006, Ross and his firm managed Governor Ted Kulongoski’s (D-OR) reelection campaign. Pundits at the Washington Post and the National Journal considered Governor Kulongoski one of the most threatened Democratic incumbent governors in the country. Despite being out spent by more than 50%, Governor Kulongoski won reelection by more than 8 %.
Prior to forming his own firm, Ross was the Director of Public Affairs and Political Campaigns for Solem & Associates, one of California’s oldest campaign management and public affairs agencies. At Solem, he worked on legislative races in Sonoma and Los Angeles counties, congressional campaigns in Louisiana, and ballot initiatives throughout California.
Ross served as a special assistant to former San Francisco Mayor Frank Jordan. For Mayor Jordon, Ross worked on policy for the Parks and Recreation Department, the Fine Arts Museums, the Department of Parking and Traffic and the Municipal Railway.
Sam Felsing is a former journalist and professional writer who has been published in both national and local publications. Prior to joining Jim Ross Consulting, Felsing worked in a number of writing and political jobs. He was most recently the city editor of a small town newspaper, where he wrote about everything from city council races to community events.
